West Calder High School represents the largest ever investment in a single education facility by West Lothian Council.
Procured in partnership with the Hub South East vehicle, West Calder has space for 1,100 pupils and includes a swimming pool and sports facilities which are also at the use of the local community.
Working with the Scottish Futures Trust, the design team developed an Inspired Learning Spaces concept which informed the shape of the new school, providing flexible spaces that increase the opportunities for collaboration and new ways of teaching.
The building utilises the slope of its surroundings, reducing the amount of waste and lowering costs of the build programme by minimising the amount of cut and removal required. Galliford Try has an ongoing involvement in the building with the Facilities Management business maintaining the school.
