The Vine is a Special Educational Needs school which will serve to educate young people with a broad range of special needs and disabilities.
The school caters to people aged 16-25 and was built on behalf of Leeds City Council and the Department for Education. Based in a two-storey building, which provides places for up to 60 people, The Vine utilises modern facilities, including a hydrotherapy pool for sensory stimulation, and life skills and wellbeing rooms.
The project also included the creation of fully adjustable hygiene rooms for cleanliness, in addition to outdoor garden spaces which provide sensory stimulation for those on the autism spectrum. To ensure students have access to the secure outdoor spaces, there is access from the classrooms, as well as from the life skills room, which has access to a garden space. The dining hall also has access to outside dining, all within a secure boundary to allow supervision.
The Vine was built with value to SEN pupils in mind, with every design choice being made to make the school a welcoming and well-equipped space for pupils of a diverse range of needs. These design choices include extra-wide corridors and doors to facilitate wheelchair users, as well as accessible kitchen areas, where students can learn important life-skills in a safe environment.
