The Oasis Restore School project is a secure facility for young offenders aged 12-17 years and is the first secure school across the Ministry of Justice portfolio. The project will be used to pioneer the way that young offenders are treated and educated while in custody.
As part of the project, Galliford Try retrofitted an old training centre consisting of six buildings, including three residential blocks, creating 50 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, two education buildings and a central services and administration building. The school is focused on creating a therapeutic environment that prioritises the well-being and rehabilitation of young people in custody.
Refurbishing buildings across the custodial estate with new and innovative technologies, material usages and design solutions indicate our long-term commitment to improve the way we deliver our projects. The project team also achieved our internal company green award for waste reduction, biodiversity and best practice. The project saved nine tons of carbon emissions, 100% recycling rate including re-use of bricks from structural alterations, created 10,000 sqm of green space, used 50% EV vehicles and recycled 10 tons of pallets.
The significant value added throughout the lifecycle of the project has been acknowledged by the client and its stakeholders, receiving ‘Delivering Excellence’ status. The social value delivered at Oasis, focused on employability skills, delivering 10 Career workshops, accommodating 19 work placement students, and providing 88 volunteering hours across the scheme.
