Kidbrooke Park Primary School in Greenwich is the long-awaited new home for the local primary school. Identified as a priority within the Council’s 2017 Schools Programme, the previous building at Hargood Road was in a considerable state of disrepair making it increasingly difficult and cost prohibitive to maintain.

Galliford Try was appointed through the Southern Construction Framework (SCF) to design and build the replacement school for 420 primary and 26 nursery pupils, including a Learning Centre for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties.

The new T-shaped, purpose-built facility sits to the north of a formerly overgrown field, with outside learning spaces, such as a wild meadow orchard, habitat forest, trim trails, and an amphitheatre to the south. The school’s sports facilities, including a new multi-use games area, changing facility and the badminton court in the main hall, are available to the community for use out-of-school hours.

The project was completed eight weeks ahead of the Council’s original programme, despite the start and finish dates being bookended by national lockdowns as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. It also achieved BREEAM Excellent through passive design techniques, including a highly insulated building envelope, high thermal mass for night cooling, ventilation stacks with heat recovery, and 90m2 of solar panels.
