Galliford Try was awarded the Imphal Barracks project, as part of the Army Basing Programme, under the Next Generation Estates Contracts.
The project included the phased refurbishment of sensitive office space within a fully occupied building, and the construction of a new build 54 bed Single Living Accommodation (SLA) building.
Following Contract Award, a period of rapid redesign was carried out to accommodate revised Client requirements, which, along with a re-costing exercise, was achieved within three weeks. Our team led stakeholder engagements of up to 40 people, including the Army and civil servants, to reconfigure the design details to MOD standards (including JSP 315, JSP 440 and Crown Fire Standards) and gain staged approvals before commencing on site.
Tight security controls were exercised over the site. All personnel obtained BPSS through our full-time Security Manager working to our DIO approved security procedures. ome areas of the refurbished building were particularly sensitive and only SC cleared managers and operatives could access and work in these areas.
Imphal Barracks has been used as an army base since 17th Century, and with the site having previously housed an underground bunker, initial site investigations identified residue asbestos cement sheeting. This was removed by a BPSS cleared specialist who was retained to undertake full – time monitoring during excavations.
Imphal Barracks was delivered on budget and defect free, with the SLA achieving DREAM “Excellent”. The SLA was handed over on schedule enabling the Army to immediately relocate staff temporarily based within bed and breakfast accommodation.
