Galliford Try is delivering a new custodial facility as part of the Government's prison expansion plans to introduce space for a further 20,000 prisoners at the HMP Rye Hill estate, a Category B men's prison within the Ministry of Justice’s High Security Estate portfolio.
Rye Hill is a negotiated public and private collaboration between the privately run prison managed by Onley Prison Services Limited and operated by G4S Care & Justice Services Limited on behalf of the Ministry of Justice.
The extension works included a new three-storey K-shaped houseblock with space for a further 458 prisoners, a new perimeter wall, and a new-build barrier buildings which include a healthcare unit, workshops and teaching spaces.
The K-shaped main new house block utilised extensive Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) being built as a pre-cast concrete sandwich panel solution, with cast-in services, including windows, doors and all M&E infrastructure, with a brickwork and cladding facade. The ancillary buildings will be delivered traditionally. The building was designed and constructed in accordance with a BREEAM Excellent rating.
Also included in the project is a new build multi-faith building, new build activity centre, extension to the existing visitors car park, and the upgrading of various areas of the existing prison to help deal with the increased capacity.
