Hexham Middle School and Queen Elizabeth High School are a prime example of a successful colocation project, which aimed to create one shared campus for both schools.
The £38m project, which provides accommodation for over 1,900 students aged between 9 and 18 years old, combines a middle school and high school, as well as a sixth form college, on a shared campus.
The project successfully addresses the many challenges posed by the site such as the retention and enhancement of existing Grade II-listed heritage assets, extensive protected and high quality landscape, complex topography and edge of green belt development, while allowing the existing school to remain operational throughout the construction works.
This design helps to minimise the chance of impact on listed assets on the site and also allows said assets to be integrated as the centre piece of the new campus, while still making them the centre piece of the new campus, rooting the schools in their historic setting.
