Galliford Try was appointed by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation to provide a new accommodation block for personnel at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM).
The £7.9m contract saw the creation of a 181-bed block for junior ranks, as well as supporting offices, and a communal area at the site near Lympstone.
The new block comprises of 21, eight-bed rooms and one ten-bed room. A multi-use education/ recreation room was also required to support training and resettlement. The building will be used by both male and female recruits who are recovering from injury and going through rehabilitation programmes.
The building consists of traditional construction due to the high-level requirements for vibration and acoustics, as well as Counter Terrorism Measures.
As part of our commitment to our environmental impact management, a high proportion of A+ rated materials were utilised, and the supply chain were sourced from the local area. The project achieved a DREAM Excellent rating.
With a restricted and tight site, as well as Covid-19 protocols to deal with, a specialist Logistics Manager created a system of just-in-time deliveries to ensure the effective deployment of resources.
In addition, the team liaised closely with the Client and Camp Liaison Officer to ensure minimum disruption to the existing occupied building, which was within close proximity of the new building construction.
Collaborative working between all parties was beneficial in resolving early issues caused by the discovery of numerous previously unknown services, which required removing or diverting.
Galliford Try worked closely with the Royal Marines Charity throughout the scheme, making donations and supporting with career events, as part of the business’s commitment to giving career opportunities for ex-forces personnel.
