Galliford Try’s Building North East and Yorkshire business has handed over Woodham Academy to pupils and teaching staff in time for the new academic year.
The new build secondary school, in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, was funded through the Department for Education’s (DfE) School Rebuilding Programme, and will provide students with a modern learning environment and specialist spaces.
The project was designed and constructed to minimise carbon usage and features air source heat pumps, solar panels, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, a biodiverse green roof, and several other features that will also reduce running costs.
In addition to state-of-the-art classrooms, the new buildings include a four-lane swimming pool, sports hall and fitness studio, all of which can be utilised outside of school hours by the local community in Newton Aycliffe.
Following the completion of the main building works, Galliford Try will move on to the next phase. This involves the demolition of the old school buildings and the creation of new playing fields, which are expected to be complete by Spring 2025.
Cliff Wheatley, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building North East and Yorkshire, said: “The School Rebuilding Programme is providing schools fit for the future and Galliford Try is proud to be involved in its delivery. The new buildings at Woodham Academy will be a real asset to the teachers, students and the surrounding community for years to come.”
Danny Morgans, Deputy Headteacher at Woodham Academy, said: “It’s an extremely exciting time for staff and students at Woodham Academy as they prepare for the new academic year in the new school building.
“The state-of-the-art facilities will provide an exceptional environment for learning in bespoke surroundings. The new facilities will have far reaching impact on the community too. The school would like to thank the work done by the DfE, Galliford Try, Faithful and Gould, and all subcontractors in providing such a fantastic facility.”
