Galliford Try Environment’s Keadby Pumping Station has successfully scooped two awards in this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midlands Merit Awards (EMMAs) in both Large Project of the Year and the Sustainability categories.
The annual EMMAs, organised by ICE, celebrate the best civil engineering projects, individuals or ground-breaking research in the region.
The £35m Keadby scheme, located in low-lying Isle of Axholme, won the Large Project of the Year award, as well as the Sustainability Award, for delivering the renewal of the existing terminal outfall with a new fish and eel friendly pumping solution, that provides the local region with resilient flood risk management protection.
As part of a joint venture with Black & Veatch, the project aims to manage drainage into the River Trent near Scunthorpe, encompassing maritime, fluvial, and tidal risk management. The project team were able to deliver engineered savings as well as environmental benefits, including reduced noise and reduced carbon emissions by 90% as a result from procuring pre-used piles that allowed higher specification materials that avoided new manufacture and associated embedded carbon.
Stephen Slessor, Managing Director of Galliford Try Environment, said: “We are delighted that the team at Keadby have received this fantastic recognition for their efforts. The project has become an exemplar scheme that will contribute in a meaningful way to how we tackle similar schemes in the future, providing environmental benefits for all.”
