A major milestone has been reached on the Grantham Southern Relief Road project with the installation of three braced pair beams for a span of the 364-meter viaduct crossing the East Coast Main Line (ECML) and River Witham.
Each beam pair, weighing 165 tonnes, was assembled using a groundbreaking construction method that has significantly enhanced efficiency and safety.
The innovative approach involved utilising the pneumatic suspension systems of delivery vehicles to precisely align and splice the beam segments directly at the site. The process began with the initial segments being delivered and placed on storage trestles. The adjoining segments were then aligned and spliced the next day, directly from the delivery trailer, ensuring precision and streamlining operations.
This method overcame several site challenges, including limited working space on a terraced slope and ground conditions. Collaborating with subcontractor Briton Fabricators, the project team designed temporary works to support the girders during the splicing process. By attaching fabricated feet and trestles to the beams and carefully lowering the trailer suspension onto pre-placed bog mats, the team created a stable, efficient working platform.
The second set of girders was similarly delivered and aligned with the first, using the trailer suspension to make precise adjustments for the splicing operation. Once bolted together, additional supports were installed, and the trailer was safely removed.
The approach created cost savings by eliminating the need for six days of crane hire, improved safety by reducing lifting operations and minimising the risk of incidents and provided efficiency gains with the load remaining supported at all times, making slinging operations unnecessary, resulting in faster assembly.
This innovative technique not only accelerated the construction timeline but also demonstrated how creative problem-solving can redefine traditional construction practices.
Barry Knox, Senior Project Manager for Galliford Try Infrastructure, commented: “This milestone is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of our team and partners. By embracing innovative techniques, we have not only enhanced safety and efficiency but also set a new benchmark for delivering challenging infrastructure projects. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved here, and it highlights the collaborative spirit and problem-solving mindset that drives this project forward.”
