Galliford Try Building London and South East Commercial’s One Great Cumberland Place project has been shortlisted for the Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA) sponsored by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) which showcase projects that utilise steel-based systems in sustainable, flexible and versatile applications in buildings across the UK.

The £64m project, formerly known as ‘1-4 Marble Arch’, has enjoyed multiple award successes over recent months, including winning the Steel Award at the Schüco Excellence Awards, as well as its Project Director Barry Kingscote scooping the prestigious Construction Manager of the Year Award at the CIOB Awards in April.

Delivered on behalf of The Portman Estate, the BREEAM Excellent project designed by AHMM involved the full demolition of the existing 1920s-built building behind retained facades, basement excavation and construction of a new nine-storey steel structure to provide 57,000 sqft of Cat A office space over seven floors, with 20,000 sqft of flagship retail accommodation occupying three floors from basement to first floor level and end-of-trip facilities at basement level two.

Matthew Pool, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building London and South East Commercial, commented: “This nomination is a significant acknowledgment following the successful redevelopment of this remarkable building. This project not only showcases the innovative use of steel in creating sustainable and flexible spaces but also represents our commitment to preserving architectural heritage while embracing modern design. I wish the team the best of luck for the awards.”

The winners will be announced on 26 September.
